I just sold off a Russian heavy and moved them into my KV-5 heavy premium tank. Do I need to train them on the KV-1 in order to up their skill levels when I play the kv5?

You can use a russian heavy crew in your kv5 without retraining them for the kv5 .

Same goes for any premium tank you have.

You can move them into the prem without retraining, as long as the nationalty and type of tank is the same.

It does not work the other way around unfortunately.
